The Sound of Music was filmed in Salzburg, Austria, the ancestral home of the von Trapp Family, as well as Hollywood. The houses depicted in the movie were not the actual home of the von Trapp Family. You can learn more about von Trapp history by taking one of our History Tours here at the Lodge!
When Maria met Captain von Trapp, he had seven children with his late wife Agathe. After Maria and Captain von Trapp married, they had three children, Rosmarie, Eleonore, and Johannes.
Captain von Trapp was not a Nazi and escaped Austria with his family to get away from the Nazi regime.
There is no official museum, but there are many family photos, movie posters, playbills and more von Trapp family memorabilia on display at von Trapp Family Lodge & Resort for guests to enjoy during their stay. The best way to lean more about the real story of the von Trapp Family is by taking our History Tour where you may even have the chance to meet Kristina or Sam von Trapp for a Q&A. During the History Tour you will also view The Real Maria, a documentary about Maria's last visit to Salzburg when she was 80 years of age. This is a must-do while staying at the Lodge or visiting the area! Public History Tours have an admission fee. The tour is included at no extra cost in the resort fee if you are staying with us at the Lodge. Check out our activities calendar here for available days and times.
Yes. Maria and Captain von Trapp are survived by their youngest child, Johannes. They are also survived by many grand-children, including Johannes' two children Kristina and Sam, as well as many great- grandchildren and great, great grandchildren.
The von Trapp fortune came from Agathe's inheritance and from Georg's successful shipping businesses. The family lost a large part of their wealth when an Austrian bank failed during The Great Depression.
To cover their expenses, Georg took on writing his WWI memoir and lectured, while the family took in boarders at their Villa in Salzburg. One of their guests was a famous opera singer who encouraged the family to share their musical talents professionally. From 1934-1938 the family found early success performing throughout Europe and recording as the Trapp Family Choir. When they left Austria for Italy in January of 1938 they performed seven shows, but The Anschluss—two months later—motivated them to arrange a concert tour in America. Having left almost everything behind in Austria, they had very little money with them when they arrived in New York and supported themselves touring as the Trapp Family Singers. During their nearly twenty year performing career, the family became known as "the most booked attraction in US history" with 2,000+ performances for over 3 million people, throughout 30 countries.
Their musical success and the 1953 sale of Villa Trapp supported the acquisition of what has since become Trapp Family Lodge. Today, some members of the family make a living as owners of Trapp Family Lodge and von Trapp Brewing. Other family members own various businesses and have other careers outside of the Lodge. The lodge was renamed in 2025 to reflect it's wide range of activities and offerings to von Trapp Family Lodge & Resort.
The von Trapp family owns and operates von Trapp Family Lodge & Resort. You may even run into one of them while staying here!
Johannes, Kristina and Sam live on property with their families at von Trapp Family Lodge & Resort, and other family members live throughout Vermont, the United States and worldwide.
Some family members still sing, although the original von Trapp children do not. Some grandchildren and great grand-children of Maria and Captain von Trapp continue the tradition of singing professionally nationally and internationally. Family members do sing with guests every Christmas Eve during non-airborne pandemic years.
We have a variety of books about the family history, many of them written by family members. We would suggest "The World of the von Trapp Family", "Maria" and "The Story of the Trapp Family Singers" upon which the Sound of Music was based. You can purchase these books in our gift shops or online. You may also purchase them online at the top of the homepage in the header under "Shop Online and Gift Cards".
